Data Protection Protocols for Business IT Systems

Author: Graham Barnes

As a business owner it is your responsibility to understand the legal implications, should you fail to have in place a sufficient system to protect data that your company holds. All businesses now rely on electronic data, holding huge quantities relating to myriad clients, suppliers and employees, alongside product and service information, company finances and other issues.

There are a couple of things that you can do to ensure that you are looking after data in an ethical and secure way. The first thing is to try and implement a culture of data protection that runs throughout the entire business, for every single employee. Everyone who handles data of a personal nature has to comply with the Data Protection Act. This ensures that the correct procedures are understood whether dealing with employee information, financial statements relating to clients or supplier information.

A second way to change the culture of your company in regards to data protection is to have in place a secure IT system that protects the data that you hold. All of your systems should be updated regularly to ensure that all information is accurate and up-to-date. You can also put in place time warnings on certain types of data that has to be securely destroyed after a certain time period, or when it is no longer pertinent to your business interests.
