Buy a phone that does everything. Mobiles phones have had the ability to act as a modem for you're your laptop for years but with the latest 3G technology data transfer is the cheapest it's ever been and won't leave your laptop's internet browser with all the functionality of Teletext.
Simpler still, a wireless network card uses a data connection from one of the mobile carriers and just slots into your laptop. This will give you a plan B should you wander out of a Wi-Fi zone. If however, you find you can't get a signal from one of the major mobile network, you're probably sat in a cave.

Most of the major "smart phone" devices will suffice to give you use of most of the utilities needed in the age of the digital nomad. However, the current "cream of the crop" for mobile comm.'s are phones which run on a windows based platform (e.g. I-mate K-jam). They provide use of programs such as Excel and MSN Messenger and allow instant synchronisation with your outlook.

For once, instant sync is just that, send an email from your mobile and watch on you laptop as it appears in your sent box within seconds. The same goes for changes made to contacts, tasks and your calendar. Needless to say this works the other way round, so you never have to miss another appointment because you made the change on your PC but forgot to manually sync your mobile before leaving the office.

The Bedouin approach is to make your phone central. Important e-mails should come to your phone. Calendar and to-do reminders should ring your phone. Key business documents are stored on your phone. Heck, even phone calls should come to your phone. And I mean all of them. Forward both work and home calls to your mobile.

A client calls your office number and imagines you in a suit in a downtown office. In fact, you're wearing jeans and enjoying a midmorning brunch with your spouse. The client is happy because he reached you in one try and didn't get voice mail. Your employer is happy because you're providing prompt and reliable customer service. But most of all, you're happy, because you're doing your job without being chained to a desk.
